Dr. Aron is President and Founder of Science Communication Studies, a nonprofit research and education organization in Columbia, Maryland. After completing her doctorate, Dr. Aron worked on applications of mathematics in public health, first at the National Institutes of Health and then on the faculty at the Dept. of Population Dynamics at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. After obtaining another degree in information technology management, she formed a nonprofit organization called Science Communication Studies for cross-disciplinary communication of science. The focus areas are (1) environmental issues in public health, (2) mathematical modeling, especially the dynamics and control of infectious diseases linking information from multiple disciplines, and (3) advances in mathematics, science, and technology education.
Current projects with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) include preparedness for the impact of El Niņo on infectious diseases and a workshop on Caribbean climate and health issues. She is developing a Climate and Health Information Exchange (chiex.net) for a collaborative research network on climate variability and human health in the tropical Americas. She has also written Internet-based educational materials on malaria control for the World Health Organization and is focusing on customized training units for different target audiences.
Ecosystem Change and Public Health: A Global Perspective (Aron & Patz, eds.), was published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in June 2001 (www.jhupbooks.com/aron) and was awarded the NASA Earth Science Enterprise's Seal of Approval as an outstanding text. It has garnered excellent reviews in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Bulletin of the World Health Organization. She has used epidemiological methods to analyze control strategies for computer viruses and is working on strategies for information assurance during bioterrorism attacks. She was the inaugural speaker for a new lecture series at Towson University Applied Mathematics Laboratory on mathematical problems in industry or science. She works with a national alliance to reform U.S. mathematics, science, and technology education.
She is currently on the associate faculty of the Dept. of
Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins where she regularly lectures on
mathematical models in infectious disease epidemiology. Other
professional activities in 1998 - 2002 include several reviews: 1)
Howard Hughes Biomedical Research Fellowships, 2) grant proposals for
the National Science Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation; and 3)
the third assessment report of the health impacts of global climate
change.
